The 'Jungle' in Calais can be an unbelievably sad place. An existence there is tough, cold and hard.
In August 2015, London based cinematic experience, Secret Cinema sent a crew of volunteers over to France with the hope that music and film could provide some much needed respite from the trials of everyday camp life.
London based rapper, Afrikan Boy took centre stage (two pallets) and was soon surrounded by a bouncing crowd, a hundred deep.
Despite some initial equipment issues and performing in a less than ideal circumstances, Afrikan Boy went onto deliver an excellent set.
Laced with pin sharp relevance and incorporating direct references to the camp which didn’t go unnoticed by the grinning crowd, he deployed powerful, meaningful lyricism to great effect.
The crowd were jumping about in unrestrained, enthused unison.
As the sun set across a tent strewn vista it was fantastic sight to see so many people smiling and enjoying themselves.
The team had also brought over a giant inflatable screen which showed the Bollywood film, 'Dulhania Le Jayenge' after the music.
It was something quite special to witness and great work by the team that organised it all.
